Sore throat, Cold, Cough and Flu:

Seasonal changes can be annoying as sore throat, cold, cough, and flu become common. Even if you have a strong immune system, if someone else has it then there is a chance that you might end up having these problems too. There are various causes that result in symptoms of these respiratory problems. Understanding how they are caused can help you get a deeper understanding of how to relieve the symptoms.

Causes of cold, cough and sore throat:

There are more than 200 types of viruses that can cause cold. Approximately half of the colds are caused due to rhinoviruses. Other viruses that can lead to cold are coronaviruses, enteroviruses, human parainfluenza virus. The virus can enter through your eyes, nose or mouth. When someone who is sick sneezes then they can spread it to you since the droplets are present in the air. Apart from this, if you have physical contact with a person with cold then it can lead to you catching a cold too. Sharing mobile phones, earphones, towels, etc. can lead to cold as well.

Cough is caused by many conditions. One of the most common is a respiratory tract infection. Asthma can cause persistent coughing. Medications that are prescribed for heart conditions can cause cough although other medicines can cause coughing too. Allergies can cause coughing. Smoking can lead to coughing. If your vocal cords have been damaged then it can lead to coughing. Infections such as pneumonia can lead to coughing.  Gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD can lead to a cough. Some life-threatening diseases such as heart failure can lead to coughing.

A sore throat can be caused due to viral infections such as flu, chickenpox, common cold, and mumps. Dry air can lead to a dry mouth which causes sore throat. An injury that affects the throat can lead to a sore throat. Gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD can lead to a sore throat. Irritants such as chemicals can cause a sore throat in people. Some triggers of allergies can lead to sore throat. Postnasal drip can lead to a sore throat. Sometimes sore throat can be caused due to a tumour that is present in the throat.

Ayurveda’s view on respiratory problems:

Ayurveda refers to respiratory problems such as cough and cold as Swasa Roga. This is caused by the Vata and Kapha Doshas. Since the Vata Dosha is cold and dry, when imbalanced, it causes breathing problems. The Kapha Dosha is heavy, cold, and slimy. When it is out of balance, it causes excessive mucus and congestion.

Immunity problems are the basis of respiratory problems. In Ayurveda, it is bala which is associated with immunity. Ojas is the product when digestion is perfectly done and everything is balanced. Ama is often referred to as toxins and it is the product of improper digestion. Ojas helps improve immunity and helps improve overall health. On the other hand, ama, does the opposite. It causes more problems so that you have internal and external health problems. For example, it blocks channels and paths that hamper the proper functioning of the body. The important point to remember is that Ayurveda stresses that ama must be reduced.

When ama is more than ojas then immunity takes a hit. The sub-doshas under Kapha and Vata are responsible for the balance or imbalance of the respiratory system. Since the doshas are connected, one imbalance in one dosha can have a major impact on the other dosha. Another key point to remember is the mind and body connection. When the mind is in turmoil then the body will show it through problems such as cough and cold. Similarly, if the internal body is out of balance then you will feel negative and you will not feel good because your mind is affected directly. This relationship is important to understand because everything is interconnected according to Ayurveda.

Cold and cough usually affect you when the season changes. At the onset of winter, it is important to follow a vata-pacifying diet. A vata-pacifying diet includes incorporating all the six different tastes into your diet. It involves consuming lassi and paneer regularly. Adding juicy fruits helps to balance vata. Nourishing grains such as rice should be added to the diet and so should moong dal during this period. As the season is about to change from winter then it is best to start eating light grains such as barley and quinoa. Consuming astringent dals during this period is beneficial for you as it provides the right amount of proteins. You should always avoid cold drinks and cold foods.
